Dr. Betsy Lavin has long worked to aid individuals in the pursuit of health and wellness. Her newest vocation as a Life Purpose Coach will serve as an extension of this effort, providing hope and renewal to women in search of a greater sense of well-being and purpose.
For the past 19 years Lavin – owner of Lavin Family Chiropractic Center located within the Wellness Center – has offered chiropractic, acupuncture and nutritional expertise that assist the natural healing mechanisms of the body.
By undergoing her recent training as a Life Purpose Coach, she has expanded her services to include not only the support of the vitality of the body, but also that of mind and spirit.
The newly created Life Purpose Retreat and Coaching Center will serve as an ideal sanctuary from which women can seek this well-being and purpose.
Lavin began to branch out into her new path over the course of 2006, sparked by a year in which both of her parent’s health began to fail. Pouring herself into their caregiving, she recalled how during this period she couldn’t help but lose sight of herself.
“Everything about me was kind of put on the back burner, especially my faith,” Lavin said. “I thought, if I’m overwhelmed with caregiving there must be others.”
With that recognition, Lavin began holding bi-annual retreats out of her home. Twice a year she invited small numbers of women to her residence in Wood Lake, and together they set-aside a day to bring their inner and exterior selves into balance.
It was a profound and rejuvenating experience that strengthened her realization that this was something of importance.
Two years ago Lavin felt a calling to broaden the retreats to include a greater number of women, catered to in a location outside of her home. The idea excited her immensely, but she recognized that there would be work to do before she would be fully equipped to answer the call.
“Women were sharing things that I knew I didn’t have the skills to coach, to speak to or to move them forward,” Lavin said.
She began training as a retreat coach to prepare for her journey’s new chapter. Desiring to incorporate a Christian component, she continued her education until she was certified as a Wellness and Retreat Coach, Christian Life Coach and Life Purpose Coach.
Through “Life Purpose Coaching Centers, International,” Lavin received training from organization founder Katie Brazelton.
Brazelton is the best-selling author of “Pathway to Purpose for Women” and worked under Dr. Rick Warren, author of a “Purpose Driven Life.”
Those familiar with such works will have an idea of what’s in store at the Life Purpose and Retreat and Coaching Center, she noted.
During the past year, Lavin set out to find a location for the Life Purpose Retreat and Coaching Center. With the unexpected departure of a few of the tenants from The Wellness Center building, of which she is the owner, the answer was unexpectedly revealed right under her nose.
Over the past few months local contractors have transformed the rear quarters of the Wellness Center into a space that has to be experienced to be truly appreciated.
A Gathering, Journey, Prayer /Surrender, Fellowship and Meditation Room constitutes the floor plan, which is adorned in contemporary furnishings of a calming nature. From the moment one enters, the change in atmosphere is evident. The Center emanates an energy that relaxes and refreshes.
Lavin will hold a variety of retreats from within the space including: Spiritual & Spa, Life Purpose, Gratitude and Life Makeover.
The retreats vary in design and length, but all are fashioned to help women step away from their busy lives and receive time for rest and renewal.
In a unique small setting where Lavin is able to work with each woman one-on-one, she assists them in finding holistic balance as they reflect on their past to gain clarity and direction toward their future.
“Women these days seems to be drowning emotionally, spiritually and physically, I view this as kind of a rescue day,” she said.
Lavin emphasized that her role as a Life Purpose Coach is not to tell the women what to do.
“A coach just asks questions where mentors and counselors, they’re the ones that give advice and say: here’s what you need to do. I don’t do that. In coaching I just bring them in, ask them the right questions and they lead themselves.”
Though Lavin has a strong faith in Christ and views the retreats as an opportunity in which God can work through those involved, she says that the retreats are open to those of all faiths.
The space is also available to rent for other male or female retreat-like events. For example, Lavin is already in talks to host a cancer-survivors group.
Even with her new role as a Life Coach, Lavin will continue to offer her traditional services at the Lavin Family Chiropractic Center on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Her counterpart, Dr, Julie Shourds, is available Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays by appointment.
On March 19, an open house will be held at the Life Purpose Retreat and Coaching Center and on April 30 the first Spiritual & Spa Retreat will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
