Without a concerted effort, our state's historic and cultural treasures are in danger of being lost to time. Consequently, the Minnesota Historical Society has awarded a Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grant in the amount of $4,800 to the Yellow Medicine County Historical Museum. The grant was approved by the Society's awards committee on August 25. It will support the museum's project of creating a historical display of each township and community in Yellow Medicine County.
Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants are made possible by the Minnesota Legislature from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund created with passage of the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment to the Minnesota Constitution in November 2008. The grants are awarded to support projects of enduring value for the cause of history and historic preservation across the state.
The Yellow Medicine township and community display project is of enduring value because it will focus on permanently displaying the history of each township and community in Yellow Medicine County. The project will begin in September with an anticipated completion date of April 1 next year. The project will include an in depth look at the history of each township and community, photos of the early settlers, and 1900 plat maps of each township and community allowing people to see exactly where their ancestors settled in the county and more specifically the township.
"It is wonderful to see so many communities and local organizations benefiting from the Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants," said Britta Bloomberg, deputy state historic preservation officer. "Minnesotans should be proud of the unprecedented opportunities these grants provide for organizations to preserve and share our history and cultural heritage." In order to preserve this history of their county each organization acts off donations from its residents.
Therefore, if anyone in Yellow Medicine County has old pictures of their ancestors or tidbits of history they want included in this display please call Brian Schulz at 320-564-4479. Please note that these pictures have to be of the early settlers of each township or community in the county and cannot be of anyone outside of the county. With each photo please have specific identification of each person in the photo, which township they settled in, and the role they played in the history of each township or community.
