Open Door Health in Clarkfield is a recent recipient of a Little Red Bookshelf. Patty Ebnet, Community Development Coordinator at Open Door Health said “Having the Little Red Bookshelf at our dental clinic in Clarkfield will provide our young patients with good books to read while they are waiting for their appointment. This also gives them the opportunity to add a good book to their collection at home to help develop their literacy over time. We are delighted to add the Little Red Bookshelf to our clinic thanks to the United Way of Southwest Minnesota.”

Little Red Bookshelf is an early literacy effort sponsored by the United Way of Southwest Minnesota (UWSWMN) that places red bookshelves at key locations where children and families often visit. Shelves are filled with donated, new, or gently-used books in multiple languages for children ages birth to 5th grade. Children can enjoy the books where they are and/or take a book home if they wish. The program aims to foster a love of reading and provide access to books for all children throughout the UWSWMN service area. Efforts to expand the program throughout United Way’s service area have been taking place since the program was inherited from another entity whose primary focus is Marshall.

Other locations with a Little Red Bookshelf include: Marshall: Big Stone Therapy at Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center, Esther’s Kitchen by Loaves and Fishes, Graham Tire, Lyon County Law Enforcement Center, Liberty Laundry, New Horizons Crisis Center, Prairie Pride Cooperative, Lyon County Court Administration, Rain & Shine Laundry, Southwest Health and Human Services, United Community Action Partnership, Western Mental Health Center, United Way of Southwest Minnesota, the Marshall Area YMCA, and both Prairie Home hospice homes. Granite Falls: Granite Falls Family Dentistry. Ivanhoe: Southwest Health and Human Services. Canby: Laundromat. Minneota: Assisted Living Facility.

Coming Soon: Dawson: Johnson Memorial Health.
