Longtime member of Montevideo’s city council, Karen Nieuwbeerta, submitted a letter of resignation effective as of June 1, 2017. She was elected to the city council on Nov. 3, 1998, and began serving on the council in January of 1999. Nieuwbeerta will be moving to the Alexandria area and she is looking forward to being able to spend more time with her grandchildren. The entire council individually thanked Nieuwbeerta for her many years of service to the city of Montevideo. Nieuwbeerta’s resignation creates an opening on the council, and a resolution accepting her resignation and declaring a vacancy on the council was considered and adopted. The council will seek to fill the vacancy according to city charter with an appointed member until the next regular election is held in November of 2018. Mayor Debra Lee Fader, on behalf of the city of Montevideo, presented a 20-year employee service award to Doug Doty. Doty was hired by the city on May 12, 1997. In recognition of his 20 years of employment, Doty received a certificate and was awarded an additional day off.
