Many weeks of meticulous preparation culminated in the annual YME spring band concert last Friday (May 12) in the school auditorium. Almost 50 young musicians dressed in crisp uniforms performed in three separate bands under the baton of Jan Lerohl. The junior high band, the largest of the three groups, opened with concert with four selections. They were followed by the jazz band with two numbers and the senior high concert band, who closed the program with five pieces. Seventh-grade trombonist Tarin Gatchell and eighth-grade alto saxophone player Samone Farris were honored as the Director’s Award recipients. The highlight of the evening was the return of YME Band Director Kristen Castiglione, who has been on maternity leave since November. She conducted her own composite arrangement of senior band members’ musical favorites. Entitled “Senior Song 2017,” it included motifs from Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Johnny Cash, Justin Timberlake, Adele, and Radioactive.
