The Granite Falls Legion baseball team kicked off their season with a close win over Montevideo. The team was bursting with energy and channeled it well into their skills. Granite Falls 3 – Montevideo 1 Jordan Odegard: 1 – 4, 3B, 2 Rbi’s Jace Odegard: 1 – 3 Austin Friese: 1 – 4 Brandon Schmidt: 1 – 3 Koltyn Louwagie: 1 – 3 Pitching: Tommy Lindstrom: (W) – 6 innings, 5 K’s, 4 walks, 1 hit, 1 unearned run Brandon Schmidt: (S)– 1 inning, 2 K’s Coach Richter: “Tommy pitched a heck of a game for us, and we played very well defensively. Jordan’s 2 Rbi triple got us on the board, and then he scored on a wild pitch. We had a lot of energy in the dugout, and it was a great way to start our season.” Their next game was against Wilmar, a tough team. The Legion stuck to their fundamentals, but still struggled with a few tough spots and getting hits.

Willmar 11 – Granite Falls 3 Jace Odegard: 2 – 3 Austin Friese: 1 – 4 Nick Peterson: 1 – 4 Cole Richter: 1 – 4 Pitching: Dalton Anderson: (L) – 2 innings, 2 K’s, 4 walks, 6 hits, 7 runs, 7 earned Tyson Knollenberg: 3 innings, 1 K, 2 walks, 2 hits, 2 runs, 2 earned Asa Ulferts: 1 inning, 4 walks, 3 hits, 3 runs, 3 earned Coach Richter: “We played well again defensively, and our effort was there. Dalton got himself in trouble early, and we just could not string enough hits together to get back into the game. Tyson came in relief, and he pitched well for us.” The third time was not the charm for Granite. There were some significant mistakes that killed any hope of building offensive momentum.

GFW 10 – Granite Falls 0 Brandon Schmidt: 1 – 2 Ethan Peterson: 1 – 2 Pitching: Brandon Schmidt: (L) – 3 innings, 1 K, 3 walks, 8 hits, 8 runs, 4 earned Nick Peterson: 1 inning, 2 K’s, no walks, 4 hits, 2 runs, 2 earned Coach Richter: “We did not play very well tonight plain and simple. We had some costly errors, and just could not get anything going offensively. We are taking too many good pitches, and not being aggressive enough. Its early yet, but we need to get things clicking here soon.” The Legion managed to learn from their mistakes and make the necessary “clicks” to take down Sacred Heart. Granite Falls 12 – Sacred Heart / MACCRAY – 6 Brandon Schmidt: 1 – 3. 2B, 2 Rbi’s Nick Peterson: 1 – 3 Jace Odegard: 1 – 4, Rbi Austin Friese: 1 – 3 Cole Richter: 2 – 4, 3 Rbi’s Bennett Knapper: 1 – 4, 2 Rbi’s Koltyn Louwagie: 2 – 3, Rbi Pitching: Tom Lindstrom: (W) – 4 innings, 6 K’s, 2 walks, 7 hits, 6 runs, 4 earned Dalton Anderson: (S) 3 innings, 1 K, no walks, 2 hits, Coach Richter: “We played much better tonight, and it was a big win for us. We hit the ball well, and had some much needed timely hitting. We were more aggressive at the plate, and made some great plays defensively. Tom pitched well again for us, and so did Dalton. It was a fun game to watch, and hopefully we can keep it rolling.”
