Lloyd Jewell Sandstrom (Slick) was born March 26, 1928 to Carl and Lena (Larson) Sandstrom in Yellow Medicine County. He passed away peacefully in Woodbury, on June 13, 2017 at the age of 89. Lloyd grew up in Sioux Agency and Granite Falls, moved to St. Paul and attended Mechanic Arts H.S. where he excelled in sports. He continued his higher education and basketball career at the College of St. Thomas on a full basketball scholarship.
From there he was drafted and played for the New York Knicks before he was drafted into the service. Upon his return from the service he went to work for Hamm's brewery, then taught and coached at Johnson H.S. until his retirement. He is a two-time inductee of the St. Thomas Hall of Fame as a team member and individual. He is a member of the Mancini’s Sports Hall of Fame. Lloyd will be remembered by his family and friends as "A man of integrity, family, and faith. He had patience and a dry, Scandinavian sense of humor.
He loved basketball, kids, his wonderful wife and toothpicks. He was neatly groomed, well informed and very generous, an excellent dancer and a great story teller." He will be deeply missed by son Kurt, daughter Mindy (Steve) Erdal, son Kevin (Linda); grandchildren Christopher (Melissa) Erdal, Luke (Jade) Sandstrom, Nathan Erdal, Cole Sandstrom, Matthew Erdal; sister Florence (Kruse) and brother Carl (Ferne); many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends who were very near and dear to him. Lloyd was preceded in death by loving wife Arlene; parents Carl and Lena; sisters Myrtle (Lecy), Judy (Jeseritz), Clara (Colstom); brothers Kermit and Silas.
Visitation will be held at Sandberg Funeral Home, 2593 E. 7th Ave., North St. Paul, MN on Thursday, August 3, from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Celebration of life will be at Lakeview Lutheran Church, 1194 County Rd C East, Maplewood, MN on Saturday, August 5 at 11:00 a.m, with visitation 1 hour prior.
