At approximately 1:25 am on Sunday, June 25, the Granite Falls Police Department received a telephone tip of an underage alcohol party located at 740 7th Avenue, in the City of Granite Falls. Multiple officers were on duty working the Western Fest Street dance, so several officers and deputies responded to the location. The officers on scene encountered minors outside who had been drinking, and very loud music coming from inside the residence. A total of 58 people were identified on and in the property and the ages of those individuals ranged from 27 years of age, to 13 years of age. Out of the 58 people identified on the property, three adults were arrested and transported to the Yellow Medicine County Jail, one for hosting the party, and two for fighting with officers, and 22 people received citations for minor consumption, drug-related charges, and tobacco violations. The City of Granite Falls Social Host Ordinance was drafted specifically for incidents like this.

Violations of this Ordinance will not be taken lightly. The Granite Falls Police Department was assisted on scene by the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s Office. CHAPTER 133: SOCIAL HOST REGULATIONS Bookmark§ 133.04 PROHIBITED ACTS. (A) It is unlawful for any person(s) to: host or allow an event or gathering at any residence, premises or on any other private or public property; where alcoholic beverages are present; when the person knows or reasonably should know that an underage person will or does: consume any alcohol or alcoholic beverage; or possess any alcohol or alcoholic beverage with the intent to consume it; and the person fails to take reasonable steps to prevent possession or consumption by the underage person(s). (B) A person is criminally responsible for violating this section, if the person intentionally aids, advises, hires, counsels or conspires with or otherwise procures another to commit the prohibited act.
