In their first game of the season, the Sting girls faced off against what will likely be the top ranked Minneota. YME also had a key player, Anna McCosh, injured going in to the game. The girls played tough defense during the first half. Minneota got a small lead, partially because the Sting racked up quite a few fouls. They finished the half 18-26.
During the second half, Minneota broke away, racking up 22 more points, while YME only managed 17, bringing the total to YME 35, Minneota 48. Half Time Score: Minneota-26 YME-18 Final Score: Minneota-48 YME-35
YME Scoring: Madi Hinz-10; Kaitlyn Mortenson-8; Kenzie Dyrdahl-6.
YME Rebounding: Kenzie Dyrdahl-6; Kaitlyn Mathiowetz-6
YME Assists: Madi Hinz-6 YME Steals: Madi Hinz-3; Meeghen Dahlager-3
Minneota Scoring: Lydia Sussner-18; Abby Hennen-10; Lizzy Gillingham-10
Coach Haakensen reported, “Minneota is a very good basketball team. Although I'm not so sure that either team played their best game, there were some positives. I told the girls that we are not going to win many games scoring 35 points. But we will also be successful if we can hold teams down to 48 points a game. It's important that we do not allow one game to dictate who we are, let alone an entire season.
When you see a final score of 48-35, most would think that game was poorly played. This was not entirely true. We know what we need to work on to get better. By year’s end, we plan on being a very good ball club. The team got into some early foul trouble. It not only dictated the course of the game over the final 7 minutes of the 1st half, but it put a lot of pressure on the rest of the team to perform. The positive was that we felt a couple of players off the bench stepped up and competed.“
YME vs Paynesville

YME Steals: Mortenson-6; Hinz-4
Paynesville Scoring: Mollie Stang-5; Bry Johnson-5
Coach Haakenson reported, “The game was a nice bounce back win after our Thursday game vs Minneota. Overall, we had a balanced scoring attack. It was nice to see Kenzie and Hannah play well on the inside. Anna also saw her 1st action of the young season. It was great to see her so happy and excited. We also played a bit more aggressively on the defensive side of the ball. Our guards extended the defense and created a few more turnovers. The best facet of a game like the one we played vs Paynesville is that we were able to play more girls. They work hard in practice everyday and deserve court time whenever the opportunity presents itself. It was a good team win.”
