The Sting boys played Renville Tuesday night. The YME offense struggled a bit at the beginning. Bennet Knapper had a frustrating number of shots bounce right back out of the hoop. There were also a fair number of interceptions, the Sting were trying to rush. The score stayed fairly close, with Renville maintaining a lead of around five or six points. At halftime the score was 24-32.

The Sting caught up pretty quickly in the second half 36-38. Renville’s Conner Aalderks, #11, scored a string of nice shots with a fake into a fadeaway, and three pointers. YME’s own #11 Carter Sneller got the Sting right back up and tied the game 43-43. With five minutes left YME was down 50-54. Renville started to pull away, sinking shots and free throws. They had a 10 point lead with two minutes left. Nicky Lindstrom sunk a three point shot and gave the Sting a fighting chance. Suter called a timeout and gave them a game plan. The Sting took a good number of shots, but none of them went in. Renville also kept making their free throws. The final score was 58-73.

Coach Suter reported, “We’ve been dealing with some injuries. Getting a full squad at practice has been difficult going back to Christmas break. We’re not going to change our game. We’re trying to control the basketball, limit turnovers, and have better pressure on defense, and we have to rebound better as well.

During the second half our defensive pressure got us a few easy buckets in transition. That helped us get right back into it. I thought we did a nice job getting the ball inside to the big guys. We had them in foul trouble most of the night. When their big guy was out, we came back. When he came back in, he took care of us.

At the end we had seven missed free throws, and they went five for five. The point stretch went from down four to down 15. We needed our seven to go in and hopefully we wouldn’t have had to put them on the line for shooting. I think the biggest thing for us to work on is we have to compete at a higher level in practice. It’s hard to turn on that intensity during the game if during practice you’re not elevating your focus and drive.”
