Last week the Sting girls played Canby. Kaitlyn Mortenson had an interesting play early on. She hit a shot from the outside. She then stole the ball, got trapped on the sideline by a double team, and threw the ball into the Lancer’s feet to bounce it out of bounds and regain possession. YME got burned a few times doing their full court press, but they got into a rhythm about 10 minutes in, extending their lead 22-13.

Sam Anderson had a few commanding rebounds. Canby had trouble keeping up with the fast drives as they got tired. Madison Hinz had a burst where she scored two free throws, stole the ball, and threw an easy lay up. Capping off the momentum, Hannah Gullickson had a solid block. YME finished the first half 45-28.

During the second half, the Sting turned up the afterburners and got a 20 point lead pretty quickly. They kept knocking the ball out of bounds to slow Canby down. Meeghen Dahlager made several good drives and interceptions. The away team had a hard time getting inside, but Canby’s number 3, Sarah Hansen, scored quite a few 3-point shots. They started to catch up, they were down by 12 with five minutes left. The pace and intensity shot up, but YME stuck to controlling rebounds and making easy shots. The final score was 82-63.

Coach Haakenson reported, “Sometimes big nights like Senior Night can be distracting, but I’m proud that our girls were able to come through and focus. There’s a lot of good teams in the conference, top to bottom. Canby may only have seven wins, but they are a much better team than their record indicates. they nailed 9 3 pointers. i was impressed. I knew coming in it wouldn’t be an easy game. We have a very balanced scoring attack. We had five girls in double digits tonight. We can attack and score from the inside and outside. I like our balance going in to the playoffs. If we’re putting up 82 points, or even 91, we’re going to be tough to beat."

"We know the sections are extremely tough. We feel like BOLD, Lac Qui Parle Valley, Minneota, and TMB all have a genuine oppurtunity to make the state tournament. I think I would feel a proud if we played three treams that made the state tournament, that’s a pretty impressive slate of games. I just hope we can compete with the teams that are good."
