The Granite Area Arts Council (GAAC) announced the creation of a community service award to honor people who are making significant contributions to the Granite Falls area community through their time, actions, talents and dedication. According to the GAAC, the recipient should serve as a role model for compassion and service and be striving to make the community a better place. He or she should also have a passion for the arts and helping others.

Mary Gillespie has been selected as the first recipient of the award. It will be presented to her at a reception on Wednesday, June 13, at 7 p.m. A jazz duo will provide music, outdoors if weather permits. The event will be held at the K.K. Berge building and is open to the public.
