In her principal’s report at Monday night’s school board meeting Karen Norell advised the board that the high school staff is discussing and supportive of a 4-day week for YME.  “More budget cuts here will mean a loss of programs this time,” said Norell.  She will be attending a Pact 4 Collaborative meeting this week where Greg Schmidt, Superintendent at MACCRAY, will give a presentation on the 4-day week.  She indicated that there are key questions that have to be asked before proceeding:  What did you actually save?  What effect did the calendar have on student achievement?
Norell provided the board with website information on three schools beside MACCRAY that have or are implementing a 4-day week schedule:  Warroad, Blackduck, and St. James.
The annual organization and selection of officers was done at the board meeting.  Members serving the district for 2010 are:  Elmo Volstad – Chair; Grant Velde – Vice Chair; Jane Hagert – Clerk; Larry Lee – Treasurer; Jane Hagert, Larry Lee and Tim Opdahl – Finance  Com-mittee   Representatives; Grant Velde and Steve Zumhofe – Policy Com-mittee Representatives; Rich Jepson and Elmo Volstad – Buildings and Grounds Representatives; Tim Opdahl, Elmo Volstad and Rich Jepson – Negotiations  Committee  Represent-atives; Rich Jepson, Larry Lee and Grant Velde – MVCC Board Representatives; Steve Zumhofe – MNRVED Representative; Rich Jepson – MSHSL Representative and Elmo Volstad – MSBA Liaison.
The board authorized Superintendent Stoeckman to adjust the school calendar to make up snow days within the school year rather than adding them on to the end of the year.
The board accepted the resignation of Pam Jensen, a classroom teacher who had previously been placed on ULA, and Senior Advocate Cindy Velde.  The board also issued contracts to Meghan Jensen and Amanda Macziewski as junior high danceline coaches.
Two special meetings were added to the school calendar:  January 14 the board will meet at 6:00 p.m. to ratify the teacher contract with YMEEA. On February 22 the board will hold a 5-year planning meeting beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Following a lengthy discussion over the proposed $12 million plus renovations to the YME facilities, Superinten-dent Stoeckman told the board that he would schedule a public meeting to be held at YME  on Tuesday, January 26 at 6:30 p.m.  The meeting will include a complete overview of the proposed renovations, an explanation of the bonding process, information on the use of alternative bonding to finance the project, tax impacts on residents in the district, sharing information on multi-million dollar renovations in neighboring districts using the same funding, open discussion and architectural information on the costs of building a new facility and time for questions and concerns to be shared by citizens.
