Curtis David Quale, 70, of Granite Falls, was sentenced to 162 months in prison, and ordered to pay $43,017 in restitution for lost wages and medical fees, plus a $500 fine, for the stabbing of his housemate, 47 year old Michelle Young.
District Judge Paul Nelson sentenced Quale at the Yellow Medicine County Courthouse on Tuesday. The judge ordered that two-thirds of his sentence be served in prison, and permitted him to serve the remaining  54 months on supervised release so long as there were no disciplinary infractions while in prison. Nelson also granted Quale 194 days of credit for the time he spent in jail following his arrest.
Quale had pleaded guilty to ‘first degree attempted murder while committing a pattern of domestic abuse’ in plea bargain that was entered during a November 4 hearing at the Chippewa County Courthouse. The attempted murder charge was the result of an incident that occurred during the early morning hours of July 17 in which an intoxicated Quale stabbed Young, now 48, multiple times as the result of an argument.
Following the plea, Judge Nelson elected to hold off on sentencing so to allow Young, who was still recovering from her wounds, and her family members an opportunity to be present when the sentence was handed down. YMC Attorney Keith Helgeson said that the family had intended to be at the courthouse for the judge’s decision, but was unable to attend because Young had recently come down with illness.
Helgeson said that a crying Quale apologized prior to the sentence, stating that ‘he was so sorry that he hurt her, loves her and hopes she can forgive me.’ Quale added that the he had plans for their future, but that she wanted something else and as a result he “just snapped.”
