Two adults and two juveniles have been charged in connection with the robbery of Korthuis Jewelry and Gifts in downtown Granite Falls in the early morning hours of Saturday, November 5.
Marcos Trevino, 21, of Blomkest and Allison Roschild, 18, of Renville, each received felony second degree burglary charges. Information regarding the two juveniles, 13 and 14, is unavailable due to confidentiality laws, though one of the youth is said to have ties to the local area.
According to testimony contained within the complaint report, Trevino and Roschild allegedly used a large rock located behind the store to shatter the front door of the business that faces Prentice Street. The four then entered Korthuis where two display cases were smashed and relieved of thousands of dollars in jewelry before the Yellow Medicine County Sherriff’s office was alerted to the alarm and area officers arrived at the scene.
Roschild told police that it was Trevino and one of the juveniles who took the merchandise and that after they left the store they continued on to Sacred Heart and Willmar where like jewelry store robberies were also perpetrated.
The Renville County Attorney’s office and the Willmar police said that charges in relation to those crimes are forthcoming.
According to the complaint, there were also two other individuals who were present for the Korthuis caper, but who did not participate. Charges for these individuals will not be brought in Yellow Medicine County, said Assistant County Attorney Stacy Vinberg.
“Based on the facts ... there wasn’t enough to charge for aiding and abetting,” she said.
Roschild told police that she had been looking in the window of the jewelry store Friday evening when she expressed to Trevino that she “liked some of things in the window and [Trevino] asked if she wanted some it,” said the complaint. The two then devised a plan to rob the store and picked up the four additional individuals to participate. One of the juveniles told police that Trevino asked the group if they wanted to take part in the heist and “everybody was like ‘yeah sure.’”
When one of the males decided he would not take part prior to the incident, he told officers that he was “harassed and called a little girl.” After admitting to the robbery, Trevino told police “he had to take care of his babies and had no permanent address and did not have a job.”
According to the complaint, the Renville Police Department was tipped off by a mother whose daughter had received a ring that was believed to have come from one of the thefts.
Officers were told that the jewelry had either been pawned or was still in the possession of the alleged perpetrators.
Jewelry and pawn receipts were found in Roschild’s car during a search of the vehicle.
Unconditional bail has been set at $100,000 for Trevino and $75,000 for Roschild. Bail with conditions was set at $75,000 and $50,000, respectively.
The two adult felony charges carry a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment and a $20,000 fine.
