Are you an agricultural producer who owns or operates land that is continually subject to crop stress, lower-than-average yields, or high soil erosion and would like to receive a guaranteed annual payment for your land? Are you a hunter concerned with the declining number of pheasants, deer, and waterfowl in the area? Have you been thinking about setting aside land for wildlife habitat and hunting opportunity? If so, the Continuous Conservation Reserve Program (CCRP) is a possible option for you. The Continuous Conservation Reserve Program is a voluntary program in which an annual rental payment and cost-share is available to establish long-term conservation cover on eligible farmland.

CCRP offers several practice options aimed at solving environmental issues including water quality, soil erosion, wetland restoration, and wildlife habitat. Some practices include native grass Filterstrips, Wetland Restorations, Farmable Wetland Program, Grass Waterways, Shelter Belts, Field Windbreaks, and Living Snow Fences. By establishing conservation parcels through the Continuous CRP program you can do your part to re-establish declining wildlife nesting and wintering habitat as well as minimize sediment and nutrient inputs into surface and ground water. All CCRP practices are administered through FSA with technical assistance and guidance provided by NRCS and the local SWCD.

Through CCRP, landowners enter into a contract for 10-15 years to establish conservation parcels in return for an annual rental payment based on a weighted average of soil types contained within the parcel. The Yellow Medicine County average annual rental rate with applicable FSA incentives is $179.50 per acre offered per year. FSA may also provide additional cost-share, sign-up, and maintenance dollars for certain practices.

If you are interested in the Continuous Conservation Reserve Program or would like to learn more about the environmental benefits of any of the practice please contact the Yellow Medicine SWCD or the USDA Service Center at 320-669-4442 ext. 3.
