Fire engulfed the home of Rachel Crowsbreast-Amos at the Upper Sioux Community Sunday, destroying the home and it’s contents while Crowsbreast and another occupant where able to evacuate unharmed.
The fire was reported at 1:11 p.m. by a 911 call and fire crews from Granite Falls and Echo Fire Departments, as well as Granite Falls Ambulance, where dispatched to the home’s location at 2475 Canku Paha (565th Street) on Reservation Highway 2, just west of Minnesota Highway 67.
The Upper Sioux Police Department was the first to arrive at the scene and according to police Crowsbreast-Amos and another unidentified occupant were sleeping in the single family trailer home when the fire started. Though the cause of the fire is still undetermined, arson has been ruled out according to the Upper Sioux PD.
Granite Falls Fire Department arrived on the scene roughly 15 minutes after the fire had been reported and found the home completely enveloped in flames.
Assistant Fire Chief Craig Opdahl commented on the scene saying, “Basically, when we got there the trailer house was fully engulfed. Usually, with trailer house fires, we’re just hoping everyone is out of the home. [Trailer homes] are a tinderbox.”
Opdahl stated that the fire department’s only recourse at that time was to contain the fire and focus on the liquid propane tanks located near the home. Fire departments cleared the scene at about 5:00 p.m. Sunday night.
The home is considered a total loss and was not covered by insurance.
