While her hands have an undeniable gift for massage, River Valley Spa owner, Mary Virnig, is a pretty good listener too.
It was last year during a tour of area spas, while still under tutelage of Ridgewater instructor Jane Gislason, that  Certified Massage Therapist, Virnig, recalled the instruction that perked her ears and took root in her brain.
“If you ever have a chance to get a massage outdoors, don’t ever pass it up,” implored Gislason. “It’s an experience you’ll never forget.”
Virnig was less interested in receiving the massage than she was in offering it. After all, the whole purpose of the River Valley Spa is to provide patrons with unforgettable experiences of relaxation.
“No sooner did she say it than I said, ‘we’re doing outdoor massage,’” Virnig recalled with a laugh. “We had the location and the means, so that was pretty much it.”
After clearing the structure with the City, Virnig enlisted her father to construct the 25-foot deck with gazebo.
“I was fortunate that my uncle Dan works for Paradise Gazebos. He built it and brought it from Aitkin and him and my dad, [Jim McGuire], were able to put the new deck up in a week.”
Completed in early August, Virnig has taken her time to decorate the enclosure so that is on par with the rest of her facilities. When it is not being used for massage, a table and chair make for an ideal seating area in the riverside setting.
In the summer, a fan circulates the air inside the gazebo while a heater allows for outdoor massage in the winter. Virnig says that it is a heightened level of experience to receive the River Valley’s service while breathing deep the fresh air and unwinding to soothing sounds of the Minnesota.
The only additional cost associated with outdoor massage will be a $5 set-up fee. Beyond that, all of the amenities associated with a standard River Valley Spa massage is included.
Since opening last December, Virnig says that business has gone better than she anticipated. The new improvements should only continue that theme.
“I feel so good when somebody walks out and they come into the relaxation area and have a totally unexpected look of surprise,” said Virnig. “I hear all the time that people can’t believe you can find a place like this in rural in Minnesota... And that’s exactly why I did this. I love it.”
