With spring rains falling, the river rising and sump pumps jerking and whirring homeowners have begun wringing their hands worrying.
Water enters the basement, soaking the carpet: The mess, the stains the smell. Cleaning that carpet is going to be a nightmare.
Yet, in that vision—that raises domestic trepidation in most—Adam Preuss saw opportunity and since December the 28-year-old Granite Falls resident has been running his new carpet cleaning business: Stain Busters.
“Well, like most people I had a stain in my carpet and went through all the work getting it out: Bought the chemicals, rented the machine and it just got me thinking,” said Preuss.
That though led to research: 8-12 percent of the population suffers from dust allergies that carpets can trap, up to 100,000 dust mites can live in one square yard of carpet, it’s recommended that people deep clean their carpets every 12-18 months, 43 percent of people try cleaning their carpet themselves and 11 percent of people never clean their carpets.
And as Preuss says, “Everyone has carpet in their home. In this country we love carpet.”
After that Preuss purchased equipment—including rotary head carpet cleaner that makes 3000 multi-directional passes every minute—and got the training. Then he got to work picking up jobs at homes and commercial places, including the Upper Sioux Community Tribal Administration, and the Ramada Marshall hotel. With each job came eager recommendations.
“The Stain Busters company did an excellent job in removing our carpet stains,” began the Upper Sioux Community’s Executive Director of Tribal Programming Laurie Blue-Pooler. “Some of the stains had been there for years! For as heavily soiled as some of the stains were, Stain Busters got every stain out of our carpet.”
And from the Ramada? Simply: “The difference is like night and day.”
Besides the big commercial jobs, Preuss will clean just about anything big to small including: Area rugs, stairs, upholstery and once the weather warms up he plans to start professionally cleaning car and truck interiors.
“Hopefully,” said Preuss (who also works at Granite Falls Coating and Manufacturing). “I can make it into a full time type of thing. I’m just going to start small and work my way up.”
Preuss said that people who try to clean their own carpet almost always use too much chemical or leave their carpet too wet for too long. When too much chemical is applied the carpet can dry with a coating of that chemical still on the carpet fibers that will attract more dust to what a person thought was a clean carpet. Leaving a carpet too wet for too long could grow mold in the carpet and damage the carpet pad beneath.
The other reasons hiring a professional to clean your carpets are the cost and time. Currently, Preuss says he’s charging 25 cents a square foot for cleaning and can clean and average sized room of 860 square feet in about two hours. “Once you figure in renting a carpet cleaner and buying the chemicals it’s not much more to have it professionally done. Then you have to figure in what your time is worth,” said Preuss.
And what about those times when the water finds it’s way through and around your foundation: That mess, those stains and the smell?
“As for flood restoration,” said Preuss. “If you know your going to go over you deductible, obviously you should call your insurance company. But if not, you can call me.”
