Alvhilda “Sissie” Smith, 97, of Granite Falls, She passed away on Monday, July 31, 2017 at Riverside Assisted Living, surrounded by her family and many special friends from Riverside. Funeral Services were held on Friday, August 4 at 1:00 p.m. at the Wing-Bain Funeral Home Chapel in Granite Falls. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Friday.
Alvhilda “Sissie” Smith was born February 18, 1920, the daughter of Oscar and Lena (Slettedahl) Hagen in Echo, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed at Echo Evangelical Lutheran Church. She graduated from the Echo High School in 1938. Following graduation, she moved to the Twin Cities where she worked at Champion Motors making airplane parts for the War Department. While working in the Cities she met and married her husband Edward Smith.
In 1960, they moved to their farm in rural Granite Falls. Together they raised two sons: Gene and Gary. Sissie enjoyed helping on the farm. She worked as a nurses aid in the Granite Falls Manor for about 17 years. Sissie remained in her farm home until her health declined. For several months, she lived with her son Gene and his family before moving to Riverside Assisted Living on July 31, 2014.
Sissie loved her family and they loved her. She touched so many lives. She had many friends. Sissie was a lifelong reader of books. She also loved making quilts and embroidering dishtowels that she shared with many of us. Her favorite animals were cats.
She is survived by her two sons: Gene (Anne) Smith and Gary (Pat) Smith of Montevideo; six grandchildren: Gena Smith, Beth Smith, Jason Smith, Jacob Smith, Shaun (Shelly) Shubert and Kelly Gendron; six great grandchildren: Lee Ann, Donovan, Kellen, Emily, Zack, and Olivia; siblings: Alice Age of Sacred Heart, Vivian Ugland of Montgomery, Ordean Hagen of Renville and Elwood (Jane) Hagen of Bloomington; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and five siblings: Leland Hagen, Willard Hagen, Donald Hagen, Llewellyn “Punky” Hagen and Lyla Ilaug.
