Obituary: Sheldon Curtis Westre

    Sheldon C. Westre, 88, formerly of Clarkfield, died on Thursday, January 28, 2010 at the Dow Rummel Nursing Home in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where he was a resident.
    Funeral services were held on Sunday, January 31, at the Dow Rummel Nursing Home Chapel in  Sioux Falls with burial on   Tuesday, February 2, at Woodlawn Cemetery in Sioux Falls.
    Sheldon Curtis Westre was born in Clarkfield on October 21, 1921, to Osmund and Ellen (Spande) Westre.
    Sheldon graduated from Clarkfield High School, in Clarkfield, completed a two year program at Nettleton Community College, and a three year program at the Christian Workers Institute.
During World War II, Sheldon lived for two years in Minneapolis, while his father worked in a war plant. While in Minneapolis, Sheldon worked for the St. Louis Railroad.  After returning to Sioux Falls, he worked seasonal jobs for Sioux Steel and was employed as a driver by the Yellow Cab Company for twenty-two years. Sheldon retired in 1984. From 1997-2006 he worked part time at the Super Car Wash on North Minnesota Ave. in Sioux Falls.
    Sheldon married Ileane Hendrickson on October 24, 1953, at the Church of the Bible in Sioux Falls. Ileane died on April 23, 1990.
    Sheldon was a member of the Y.M.C.A. for over fifty years. A kind and gentle man, Sheldon’s faith was a very integral part of his life. He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church and also attended the Church of the Harvest prior to his moving to Dow Rummel in 2006 where he attended services at the Halladay-Peterson Chapel.
Having been preceded in death by his parents; his sister Idell (Virgil) Park; and his wife Iliane; Sheldon is survived by his sister Idell’s nieces and nephews: Paul (Karen) Van Bockern, Donna (Dave) Krueger, Steve (Sarah) Van Bockern, Tom (Suzanne) Van Bockern, Bruce (Gail) Van Bockern, Jim (Donna) Van Bockern, Jim (Jan) Willard, Roger (Sherri) Willard, Linda (Les) Corporon, Carole (Glenn) Ungerer, David (Kathy) Willard, Robert (Rose Mary) Willard, Daniel Willard, and Mark (Carlotta) Willard, along with the staff and residents at Dow Rummel whom he considered family.
    Arrangements were with Miller Funeral Home of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
