Lyle Grieger, 91 of Wood Lake, died Saturday, February 6, 2010 in the Granite Falls Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 10, in St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wood Lake.
Lyle Robert Herman Grieger was born November 13, 1918 in Echo to George and Anna (Hagen) Grieger. He was baptized in Echo on January 27, 1919 and confirmed June 30, 1935 in Sharon Lutheran Church in Lamberton. Lyle grew up near Echo and Lamberton where his family moved in 1928. He attended District
#3 Country School. On November 2, 1936 he was united in marriage to Veronice Florence Conrad in Brookings, South Dakota. They lived near Lamberton until moving to Wood Lake in 1943.
Lyle farmed until retiring in 1982. He was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wood Lake where he served as Mission Treasurer for 7 years and belonged to the Men’s Club. Lyle belonged to the Wood Lake Shipping Assn. for 12 years. He served on the Equity Elevator Board for 15 years, Wood Lake Industries board from 1973 until present serving as treasurer for 29 years, the Wood Lake Clinic Board from 1959-1988 serving as treasurer for 3 years, the Wood Lake Development Board from 1973-1998, on the City Council for 6 years and as acting mayor for 2 years. Lyle also worked as an insurance agent for Redwood County Insurance Co. for 20 years while farming and at age 80 purchased and managed a four plex in Wood Lake for 5 years.
He enjoyed fishing, gardening, growing and sharing the fruits of his garden with others and traveling. He traveled the entire 48 contiguous states and Canada sightseeing.
Lyle is survived by his wife Veronice, five children; Shirley Warneke of Anoka, Marilyn (Bill) Sarvela of South Windsor, Connecticut, Robert (Paulette) Grieger of Wood Lake, Sharon (Dale) Wildman of Maple Grove, and Barbara (Leo) Gerold of Shakopee; siblings Emma Rogotzke of Springfield, George (Darlene) Grieger of St. Louis Park, and Wallace (Lorrayne) Conrad of Pine River. Also surviving are his 16 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, 7 great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother, 2 sisters, 7 brothers-in-law, 5 sisters-in-law, a son-in-law and 2 great grandchildren.
