Jeverna C. Nelson, 98, of  Slaton, formerly of Hanley Falls, died on July 25, 2010,  at the Golden Living Center in Slayton.
Funeral Services were held at Christ Lutheran Church in Slayton on Tuesday, July 27, with Rev. Ted Kunze officiating. Interment was at Yellow Medicine Lutheran Ceme-tery, Hanley Falls.
Jeverna Nelson was born on February 13, 1912 in Sandnes Township, Yellow Medicine County, to Albert and Johanna Loe Cole.  Jeverna was the oldest of nine children.  She was baptized and confirmed by the Rev. Lohensgard at the Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church. Upon graduating from Hanley Falls High School she enrolled in the rural schoolteacher’s training course in Moorhead.  She taught in many of the country schools in Yellow Medicine County including the school she attended as a youngster.  She taught in a one-room schoolhouse near Canby where she had all eight grades and a total of 42 pupils, ranging in age from 6 to 16 years old.  On October 25, 1962 she was united in marriage to Donald Undeen Nelson.  They made their home in Minneapolis where Jeverna taught at Fulton Elementary School. She retired in 1974.  She and Donald then moved to the York Plaza in Edina.  Donald passed away on September 25, 1988.  Jeverna remained in Edina until 1997 when she moved to Sunrise Terrace in Slayton. In 2006, she became a resident of the Golden Living Center in Slayton until she passed away.  She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Slayton. Jeverna pastime’s included attending the Minneapolis Symphony at Orchestra Hall, the Shriner’s Zuhrah Strings Orchestra, riding in their yellow Cadillac, Campfire Girls Club, quilting, saving clippings, reading, daily devotions and loving her large extended family.  But her passion was teaching.  She taught over a thousand children, many of whom kept in contact with her after they had grown up.
Jeverna will be sadly missed by her three sisters, Ardell Redetzke of Willmar, Kathleen Stokesbary of Redwood Falls, and Edith Timm of Bend, Oregon; two sisters-in-law, Katherine Cole of Montevideo and Zelda Cole of Lakeville;  godson, Arlyn and Sandy Stokesbary of Slayton; and goddaughter, Mary and Randy Koll of Belle Plaine; and many nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald; five brothers and their spouses, Luverne and Pearl Cole, Arvid, Donald and Orlet Cole, Virgil and Vi Cole and Curtis Cole.
