Alma Jeanette Skalbeck, 96, of Sacred Heart, died Saturday, August 28, 2010, at the RenVilla Care Center in Renville.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, September 1, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Sacred Heart, officiated by Rev. Dale Svendsen. Burial was at First English Cemetery in Sacred Heart.
Alma Jeanette Skalbeck was born on September 27, 1913, on the family farm north of Echo to Norman and Katy (Anderson) Lecy. She was baptized at Rock Vale Church north of Echo. As a member of Rock Vale Church, Alma taught Sunday School and was involved in the choir and the Luther League. Alma attended Echo Country School District 65 through the 8th grade and graduated from Echo High School in 1933. Alma was united in marriage to Kenneth “Kay” Skalbeck on May 5, 1940, at the church parsonage in Granite Falls. Alma and Kay made their home on the Skalbeck farm ½ mile west of Sacred Heart and there they raised their four children. Alma and Kay were members of First English Lutheran Church and later Alma joined Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. As a member of both churches, Alma was active with the Ladies Aid, Bible Study, Church Council, the Alter Guild, and taught Sunday school. Kay passed away on February 19, 1956. In 1980, Alma started spending the winter months in McAllen, Texas where she enjoyed the warm weather and many social activities. Alma enjoyed traveling, weekends at the cabin, keeping in touch with family and friends, and an occasional trip to the casino. She was a member of the Renville County Cancer Society and a cancer survivor since 1986.
Survivors include her children: Karen (Gordon) Healey of Glencoe, Susan (Duane) Holien of Granite Falls, and Jerry Skalbeck of Mason City, Iowa; her grandchildren: Karla Gottfried and Jeremy (Laura) Holien; her two great grandchildren: Brandon and Crystal Holien; her step grandchildren: Theresa (Vern) Blow, Joe Healey, Jean Penman, and Renae Keppers; four step great grandchildren and two step great-great grandchildren; her brother Gayle (Norma) Lecy of Echo; and her sister-in-law Hildora Lecy. Alma is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Kay, and her son Keith, an infant son, her brothers Thomas, Noral and Kenneth Lecy, her sister LaVine Hanson, her brother-in-law Philip Hanson, and her sisters-in-law Myrtle and Mildred Lecy.
Arrangement were with Dirks-Blem Funeral Home, Sacred Heart.
