The election season is upon us and again the elections will feature seats for many local offices. These city councils and school board positions have a major impact on our day-to-day lives.
There is a need for local citizens to ask themselves not if, but when, they should step up, roll up their sleeves and help make the important day-to-day decisions that guide our schools and our communities in so many ways.
That fact is illustrated on this page by the two letters from YME school board members Elmo Volstad and Richard Jepson. Both have served the Granite Falls and YME school districts with many years of service. As both of them draw to a close their school board service they mention that the experience of serving on the school board has been both humbling and very fulfilling.
The letters make a good point.
Public service can indeed be both challenging and rewarding.  It can also be a time to grow and learn. It is about focusing on the big picture of what is best for the community
Both these school board members seem to be saying that the hard work and the time spent are well worth it.
Indeed, sitting on a city council or school board is one of the best ways to make a contribution to your community. It is one thing that every citizen should consider.
We encourage our readers to consider getting involved. If it seems daunting, ask some questions and find out from other board members  or from those who have served before. They had their doubts at one time, too.
Fortunately, they decided to go forward and get involved.
The time to follow their lead is now. The deadline to file for school board and city council offices is next Tuesday at 5 p.m. It is time to get involved and serve your community.
Volstad and Jepson both  say that their time spent in public service was very worthwhile.  Why not give it a try?
