Girls Basketball: YME stuns top-seed MVL in Subsections

Johnson and Scheffler lead Sting to upset win over Minnesota Valley Lutheran

Yellow Medicine East would earn a trip to the Subsection finals by knocking off top-seeded Minnesota Valley Lutheran 51-45 Tuesday night in Redwood Falls.

Sophomore post Angie Scheffler would again lead the Sting in scoring knocking in a game high 16 points just three days after scoring 19 in YME’s opening round win over Redwood Valley. Scheffler would score 14 points in the second half to help YME take a second half lead and maintain control of the game the rest of the way.

Senior guard Aimee Johnson would follow Scheffler with 15 points as the duo accounted for nearly 61 percent of the Sting’s scoring. Johnson would also lead the team in assists with seven.
Down three at halftime, the Sting would outscore MVL 33-24 in the second half and would hold the Chargers to shooting just 34 percent from the floor.

On the other side of the Section 3AA North Bracket, three-seeded Lac qui Parle Valley would knock off two-seeded Montevideo to earn the right to face the Sting in the Subsection finals this Friday in Redwood Falls at 6:00 p.m.
