Link Steffen, a 1993 graduate of Granite Falls-Clarkfield, was named Section 1A wrestling coach of the year for leading Zumbrota-Mazeppa to the Class A State Tournament. This year marks Zumbrota-Mazeppa’s first State Tournament appearance since 1998.
Zumbrota, the three seed, would beat Paynesville in the opening round of the State Tournament before losing to two seeded Frazee in the semi-finals and top-ranked Minneota in the third place match.
A standout in football, wrestling and baseball while at Granite Falls-Clarkfield, Steffen finished his prep wrestling career as a two-time state champion and with a career record of 122-24. Moving on to Southwest Minnesota State University, Steffen would compile a 114-22 record and earn a NCAA Division II national title at 190 pounds in 1998.
