On Monday the Granite Falls council directed city engineer Dave Berryman to seek bids for an estimated $360,000 repair of a section of the dike road in Stony Run Township that washed out during the spring flood.
The award of the bid is contingent upon the development of an agreement with Stony Run Township that outlines responsibility for future upkeep of the road.
Granite Falls recently became active in assisting in the repair of the dike road after township officials sought both city and county assistance. The Yellow Medicine County Board was said to have indicated that they did not want to be involved.
Council members sought funds for the project through the DNR’s flood mitigation program. To their surprise the DNR not only had $360,000 to set aside for Granite Falls, but $1 million.
During the 2010 bonding session the City of Granite Falls requested $2.2 million for flood mitigation projects. Earlier this year the City was informed that it would receive $1 million of that amount, but now that the city had successfully been able to utilize those funds on levy improvements, the additional monies would be made available.
“The DNR is very pleased with how things have gone,” said Mayor Dave Smiglewksi. “It’s taken a lot of cooperation between a lot of people.”
News of the additional funding puts the City in a situation where it is able to repair the damages to the dike and still have significant remaining dollars available. Council members said that the Flood Task Force and city engineer will be in charge of proposing the best use of those funds.
Berryman said that he expected the dike road work to be completed in October. It will involve the refortification and paving of the most at-risk 1,000 to 1,200 foot stretch of the dike road that washed out in the March flood and is most prone to damage in the future.
