Local teachers attend education conference

For more than 20 years, the nine districts making up the Minnesota River Valley Education District (MRVED), have benefitted from a conference that takes place annually that provides educational and networking opportunities. This week, after a one-year break due to COVID-19, educators from those districts gathered at the Lac qui Parle Valley High School once again for the annual MELT (MRVED Educators Learning Together) Conference.

River Ramblings

Over the past year and a half, I have joined several mayors from around the state in an online noon meeting, often every two weeks and lately every month. Mayors from Metro area cities of St. Louis Park, Edina, Lakeville, Minnetonka, Egan, Burnsville, and Savage are usually there. Greater Minnesota Mayors are from Fergus Falls, Marshall, Becker, Willmar, Moorhead, Duluth, Northfield, Bemidji, Ely, and Rochester.

Ole & Lena Days Mid-Winter Celebration returns this year

Granite Falls is offering a variety of winter entertainment opportunities from Jan. 29 through Feb. 5 with the return of the Ole and Lena Days Mid- Winter Celebration. The week of festivities begins Saturday, Jan. 29, when the Granite Falls Area Chamber of Commerce hosts a celebration fundraiser, titled “Ole and Lena Hot Havanna Nights” at The Rock Dining & Entertainment Center. Tickets are on sale now for the event that includes dinner as well as entertainment by awardwinning comedian Tim Harmston, featured in this week’s edition of the Advocate Tribune. There will also be a silent auction, 50/50 raffle, open treasure chest, and wine pull. The event begins at 6 pm. and ends at 9 p.m. To purchase tickets, call the Granite Falls Area Chamber of Commerce at 320- 321-3202. The event raises funds to help support Chamber events throughout the year.

New to Medicare virtual class set for January 27

Learning what to do when you become eligible for Medicare can seem overwhelming. This class is for people who will be new to Medicare and would like to learn about Medicare Parts A, B, C and D. Topics will include a comprehensive introduction to Medicare including what Medicare covers, supplemental insurance, and Part D prescription coverage. During the class, attendees will learn the Medicare enrollment details, how to get the most from benefits and how to research Medicare plan options using the Medicare.gov site.

Grieving and Dementia

When we think about someone grieving, we often associate that when a death has occurred. In talking to my caregivers, however, many express that they are already grieving even though their loved one is still alive. It makes sense, however, as we know with dementia, it can be a long journey watching the losses one’s loved one is experiencing.

Otaibi joins the Department of Public Transformation

The Department of Public Transformation in Granite Falls announced in December that two new employees will be joining the staff this month. Last week, the Advocate Tri- bune introduced Holly Doll, who will be joining the staff as the Ignite Rural Program Coordinator. Sarina Otaibi will be joining the staff as the Creative Rural Building Program Director. The Department of Public Transformation (or DoPT), is an artist-led organization working to develop creative strategies for increased community connection, civic pride, and equitable participation in rural areas.

Great White band to perform at Prairie’s Edge in February

As a part of the Ole & Lena Days Mid- Winter Festival, Prairie’s Edge Casino & Resort is hosting a benefit concert/ Firemen’s Dance with the bands Great White and Molly Hatchet on Saturday, Feb. 5 . Great White is a band most known for their mid-to-late 1980s hits including “Once Bitten, Twice Shy”. The Los Angeles-based band is comprised of members Mark Kendall, Audie Desbrow, Michael Lardie, Scott Snyder, and Mitch Malloy. They’ve sold around eight million records worldwide.
