A staple of my time in journalism is apparently attending the Minnesota’s Machinery Museum annual meeting. In all of my history in newspapers around the area, the one event that I have attended each year that I was involved in newspapers has been this particular meeting.

Traveling entertainment group puts on a production of “The Magic Flute” with local actors

On Friday evening, a traveling performance group called Mixed Precipitation hosted a presentation of a multiple-volume production of the Pickup Truck Opera: The Magic Flute. The production was created by a group of four that travels around the state, and into Wisconsin to network within communities with the idea of bringing theatrical art to rural locations.

The Community Newspaper

When I was growing up in the early 1980s, we had a weekly newspaper in our town. There was a woman assigned to cover our little neighborhood. I remember her calling each week to ask my mother what was new in our family. Did Jeremy make the honor roll this quarter? Had we gone on vacation recently? Did we get a new pet? She would take this information from anyone in the neighborhood who was willing to share it and would write a column each week. When the paper came out on Wednesdays, my mother was always excited to read what was going on in the neighborhood. Everyone on our street knew each other. We played outside with the kids every day until dusk. My parents were in a bowling league with our neighbors. We had a block party in the street in the summer. When a new family moved in everyone welcomed them and introduced themselves. I guess you could say it was a great community.

“I’m going fishing.” (John 21:3)

I love to fish. My favorite place to fish is on the Missouri River, launching out of the State Park near Pollack, South Dakota. It’s easy to feel the presence of the Great Creator on that beautiful expanse of water. Floating along on the river is relaxing. Well, normally it’s relaxing, as long as the wind doesn’t come up and you end of fighting rolling waves bigger than your boat to get back to shore. Or you don’t see a rattle snake swimming toward you trying to get in your boat. Normally, it is relaxing, even if the fish aren’t biting, the river is a beautiful place to be.
