The building known locally as the NSP Plant has been a part of the Granite Falls landscape since it was constructed in the 1930s to produce energy for an area of communities and farms spanning from the Twin Cities to Sioux Falls. The building could be seen from most directions approaching the town, and has been out of commission since 2009. The building, owned by Xcel Energy, has been slated for demolition since this spring, and workers hired by Xcel Energy, have been cleaning up hazardous materials in advance of the actual demolition work. The demolition is being completed by a company named Veit. Once complete, Xcel Energy plans to have the site backfilled, graded and seeded for restoration to vegetated land. The company will continue to maintain the Minnesota Valley substations on the property as a hub for the electric grid. Demolition of the building began early last week, and photographed is the progress that could be seen by Saturday afternoon.
