When I recently interviewed Troy Huntley about his North American Sturgeon Championship win, he mentioned that the competition was a lot of fun, and suggested I should try it sometime. I had to point out that I haven’t been fishing since I was a child, and likely wouldn’t even remember how the whole thing works.
Kyle Haugen began his new role as Executive Director of the Granite Falls Economic Development Authority on September 12th. As a recent transplant to the community, Haugen was drawn to the position as he and wife Melissa have both come to have a great appreciation for what the community represents, as well as a desire to help the community grow. “Melissa and I moved to Granite about three years ago and we really, really enjoy the town. Having a skill set that I thought would be a good fit for what the EDA was doing and then being able to help the community, I thought that sounded like a whole different challenge for me. It’s different than what I’ve done in the past, but something I think I would really enjoy,” Haugen says.
Iverson Tree Farm has been hosting their annual Farm Fall Festival since 2019, with activities and more on the Tree Farm’s grounds each weekend throughout the season. Iverson Tree Farm was purchased by rural Belview cattle farmer Cody Nelson and his wife Mel in 2019 from former owner Ron Iverson.

Brenda Jans Darling, 49, daughter, sister, mother, niece, aunt, friend, teacher, mentor, and role model, passed away at her home in Montevideo on September 21, 2022. As the first-born to Rodney and Martha Jans on April 16, 1973, in Montevideo, she set the bar high for her three sisters, Laura (Gene) Streich, Debra (Sean Gallimore) Jans, and Anna (Michael Barber) Jans. She transformed into a fierce advocate of a mother for Cadence Jans (18) and Rowan Darling (15), who enchanted her world with love and purpose. She is also survived by nieces and nephews Gage Wambeke, Stephan Streich, Blake Streich, Sydni (Jacob) Kirkwood, McKayla Streich, Ashtyn Streich, and greatnephew Bentley Loftberg. A graduate of Montevideo Sr. High School (’91), Brenda received her bachelor’s degree (’95) in Music from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and obtained her master’s degree in Secondary Mathematics Education at Eastern Illinois University in 2014. For her outstanding graduate research, creative activity, and scholarship while teaching at International American schools in Seoul, South Korea (2010-14), and Jakarta, Indonesia (2014-16) she was awarded the esteemed King-Mertz of Excellence in the College of Sciences Research in 2015 before returning to her hometown of Montevideo to share her teaching talents in both choir and math from 2017-2021. The Granite Falls Living at Home Block Nurse Program recently received a Minnesota State Arts Board (MSAB) Grant, titled the Creative Support for Organizations grant. The organization is putting the grant to use for a new program idea and has scheduled three upcoming idea discussion and listening sessions to ask the question how can the arts support caregiving. The MSAB grant provides the organization with the opportunity to utilize arts programming as a part of their efforts to develop unique caregiver support activities for seniors, people living with disabilities and local caregivers. In keeping with a number of the programs the organization already offers such as the Heart2Heart memory cafe’s projects, the Building Bridges memory choirs performances, the Literary Post Memoir Writing Workshops and the Remember Project Dementia plays, the grant will include work with a program titled “Positively Arts” that will involve a nearly yearlong project with two phases. In the first phase, Danette McCarthy of the Remember Project will work with the organization to coordinate the three scheduled listening sessions. The idea is to generate and inspire ideas that could be put to use in the organizations programs. “We’re inviting a diverse population, so we have certain people who are invited to these but we want this to be open to the general public. We have a number of questions, prompt ideas but the net will be going from very broad to zeroing in on some ideas,” says Mark Roisen of the GF Living at Home Block Nurse Program.
The funny thing about time is it’s always something I wish I had more of but the moment I have some actual free time on my hands, I have no idea what to do with it. I mean, where do I start? I could use my time to learn a new language.

In my last article, I wrote about the upcoming free fall movie event being sponsored by MAMLN (the Montevideo Area Memory Loss Network) and the Millennium Theater in Montevideo. The free movie event is scheduled for Wednesday, October 5th and they will have two show times: the first at 2 p.m.
