YMSWCD works on new outreach initiative in 2023

The Yellow Medicine Soil & Water Conservation District is gearing up for the year ahead with a new initiative, planning visits to ag retailer offices and ag-related businesses throughout Yellow Medicine County. “Some SWCDs around the state have put staff in the ag retailer offices to make the connection to conservation options,” explains YMSWCD Director Tyler Knutson. “Many retailers appreciate this because it gives them one more resource to their customers.”

‘Exploring Conservation on Rented Farmland’ Online Workshop Jan. 24

Are you a farmland owner who values good stewardship practices or a farmer looking to invest in soil building on rented land? The Land Stewardship Project (LSP), in partnership with the Lac Qui Parle Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD), is offering an online workshop on Tuesday, Jan. 24, to help you act on your conservation values on rented land. This event, which runs from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., is for farmland owners, retired farmers, farmland inheritors, and conservation farmers who would like ideas on how to invest in soil building on rented land. The workshop will use the Zoom platform and is free and open to the public with online registration. Take the 16th Annual Community Health Challenge: The objectives of the 16th Annual Community Health Challenge are to encourage people to achieve a healthier lifestyle and to get more people active in our community. Join together with three other friends to form a team. Collect points for weight loss, and participating in community events over a 12 week time frame. The cost of the challenge is $10 per person/$40 per team. Your reward, other than feeling better and looking better, may be a cash prize! The first weigh-in will be anytime between January 3rd – January 15th. We will have a middle weigh-in anytime between February 11th – 19th, and the final weigh-in will be anytime between March 25th – April 2nd. The deadline to register a team is Sunday, January 15th.

Wanda Claudette Lee

Wanda Claudette Lee was born on February 4, 1961, in Chicago, Ill. Her parents were Harold Begay and Romona Blue. Wanda grew up around Granite Falls and the Montevideo areas and attended school mainly in Montevideo. Wanda was married to Herbert Howell on his grandfather’s place near Granite Falls. She became a mother, which kept her busy. Later in life, she drove semi over the road, and enjoyed seeing the country behind the wheel. In 2013, Wanda moved to Sioux City, Iowa and lived there until just recently. While in Sioux City, she worked at Wells Blue Bunny and also Tyson Foods. Wanda loved fashion and keeping up with the latest beauty trends. Her collection of purses seemed to be endless and going shopping was a highlight. Wanda had a talent for growing plants. Wanda is survived by her children, Alena Eaton of Granite Falls, Alvin (Megan) Howell of Granite Falls, Herbert Howell of Granite Falls, Adrian Howell of Granite Falls; grandchildren, Arabella Howell, Emmanuel Boklep, Micah Branham, Charles Howell, Adrianna Howell, Klayton Miller, Alexis Howell, great-grandson, Sirius Esparza; brother, Timothy Blue of Granite Falls; stepmom, Sheila Begay of Granite Falls; as well as other relatives and friends. Wanda is preceded in death by her parents; son, Charles Howell; sisters, Dinah Begay-Anderson, Phyllis Shadle. Arrangements are with the Wing-Bain Funeral Home of Granite Falls.
