Southwest Minnesota 4-H in partnership with Ridgewater College held a Junior Vet Kids Camp on February 11 at the Agricultural and Veterinary Science Department on campus in Willmar for 52 youth from Southwest Minnesota.
Minnesota 4-H held the Southwest BLU and TEEL leadership workshops on February 18 at Southwest Minnesota State University for 58 youth from across our region. In February, youth from across Minnesota gathered to participate in the annual 4-H Building Leadership and Understanding (BLU) and Teens Engaged in Emerging Leadership (TEEL) workshops.
And we’re back! We (I) ceded the paper inches to other news last week: your columnist mistakenly believed there was no local arts news she hadn’t already updated you on. Boy, was she wrong.
Last week, representatives from Xcel Energy hosted an informational open house at the Kilowatt Community Center in Granite Falls in order to present information on the proposed routes for an upcoming transmission infrastructure project to serve Upper Midwest customers. In addition to the information available by way of fliers distributed talking about the construction process, working with landowners, and electric and magnetic fields, Xcel Energy provided rows of large printed maps for landowners to see where their property is in relation to any of the 15 proposed routes. The community also had the opportunity to provide feedback in written format that will be taken into consideration when Xcel settles on which of the proposed routes to use.
Over the weekend, the Yellow Medicine East boys varsity basketball team took on Dawson-Boyd in the Section 3A-North tournament in Montevideo for a 3776 loss. Leaders in the game included Bryce Sneller who scored 16 points with seven rebounds and three blocks, while Owen Torvik added another nine points to the team total.

My husband and I love rocks! That may sound strange, but we see so much beauty in rocks. It could be the color, the size, the shape, even the mixture of how an individual rock is made up. It’s kind of funny that of all the different billions or trillions of rocks there are on earth, there are only three main types of rocks: sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic. Each of these types are formed by different processes that take place, like melting, cooling, eroding, compacting, or deforming. Agates are our favorite “rocks”, but agates are not classified in one of these three main types of rocks. Agates are considered mineraloids and they form naturally when an empty pocket inside a host metamorphic rock fills layer-by-layer with microcrystals.
Having attended many sporting events over the last couple of years, I’m continually entertained by the conversations the youngest of sports fans are having during the games. Quite often, the youngest fans are crowded right up front, where the action is, and they have lots to say.
Dear Editor, In reference to the snow storm 2/21-2/23/23, I want to take the opportunity to recognize the staff of Avera Granite Falls Care Center who hunkered down in the building or stayed in town versus going to their homes out of town to ensure that our resident’s needs were met. This includes housekeeping, dietary, nursing assistants, and the nursing staff. Thank you to Linda Roschild, Natalie McPhail, Crystal Schjenken, Lee Timm, Ada Thomas, Laura Beyer, Alex Peterson, Amy and Kelsey Rhode, Isaac and Ruby Esparza, and Lorie Tjaden.
