Local students named to Bethel University Dean’s list
Local Students attending Bethel University in St. Paul, have been named to the Dean’s List for academic excellence for the fall 2022 semester.

MARY JEAN O’TRIMBLE
Mary Jean O’Trimble, 91, formerly of Nortonville, Kan., died on Monday, March 27, 2023, at FW Houston Senior Living Center, Winchester, Kan. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m.

EDWARD SCHOMMER
Edward Schommer, 91, of Granite Falls passed away on Saturday, March 25, 2023, at RenVilla Health Center. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 29 at 12 p.m. at Wing-Bain Funeral Home in Granite Falls. Visitation was held one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Burial was at Doncaster Cemetery. Edward Peter Schommer was born January 15, 1932, the son of John and Anna (Eischens) Schommer in St. Leo. He grew up in Madison. Ed graduated from high school in 1951. He served his country in the United States Army where he was a Mess Sargeant. He was in charge of the kitchen and other cooks. Following his honorable discharge, he lived in South-East Minneapolis, where he worked for Laviris and then Graco as a lead man and machinist for 25 years. He was united in marriage to Carolynn Cavender. He moved back to the Granite Falls area in the mid 1990’s. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Ed loved to tinker and was a jack-of-all-trades. He was always working on ideas and inventing items to make life easier. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He liked his trips to the casino and playing pool where he got the nickname “Fast Eddy”. He also enjoyed cribbage. He was an animal lover and enjoyed spending time outdoors and nature. He cherished his family, his grandchildren and greatgrandchildren were his world. He had a great sense of humor and would like to say he was hilarious. He was a kind, gentle, generous and humble man. Ed is survived by the love of his life Carolynn Cavender Schommer of Granite Falls; children: Matt (Julie) Schommer of Granite Falls, Dawn Chase of Granite Falls, Kari (Allen) Redwing of Granite Falls and Lisa (Russell) Leaf of Granite Falls; 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, soon to be 24; as well as nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Dorothy “Dode” (Hayden) McCarthy, 94, of Roseville passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 20, 2023. Dorothy lived vibrantly up to her final day.
Chippewa County residents invited to attend flood map information open house
Representatives from FEMA will host a Flood Map Information Open House for communities in Chippewa County, Minnesota, on April 5, 2023, from 5 – 7 p.m. CT. The open house will give residents a chance to review preliminary versions of the recently completed Flood Insurance Study (FIS) report and its accompanying preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs).
2023 Free Park Days announced for Minnesota state parks, recreation areas
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is waiving vehicle permit fees at all 75 state parks and recreation areas on four dates in 2023. The Free Park Days will be Saturday, April 22; Saturday, June 10; Saturday, Sept. 9 and Friday, Nov. 24.

Helmsley Charitable Trust grant awarded to Avera Granite Falls
The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust has granted $682,498 to Avera and Access Health to purchase ultrasound machines as part of a $26.4 million ultrasound initiative in Minnesota. The initiative includes nearly $18.3 million to help Minnesota hospitals and health centers purchase ultrasound imaging devices and an additional $8.1 million to boost sonography and point of care ultrasound (POCUS) training opportunities across the state.
