Marjorie Hegna, 88, of Granite Falls passed away on Sunday, May 29, 2022 at her home at Granite Ridge Assisted Living. Funeral services were held on Monday, June 6 at 11 a.m. at Granite Falls Lutheran Church. Arrangements with the Wing-Bain Funeral Home.
Marjorie Gina Lecy Hegna was born on July 30, 1933 on the Irvin Lecy farm near Gwinner, N.D. to Lillian F. (Petterson) and Irvin Lecy. She passed away on May 29, 2022 at the age of 88 years.
Marj was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She attended country schools in rural Granite Falls and Gwinner and graduated from Echo High School in 1951.
On December 27, 1953, Marj was united in marriage to Donald James (Jim) Hegna at Rock Valle Lutheran Church. They celebrated 63 years together before Jim’s death in 2017. To this union were born two children, a son Steven James in 1954 and a daughter Constance Marie in 1956.
Prior to her marriage Marj worked at the Yellow Medicine County Courthouse. After raising her family, in 1975 she began working at Tri-County Coop as a bookkeeper until her retirement.
Marj and Jim were avid gardeners. Marj also had many beautiful flower beds. She was a charter member of the Lady Slipper Garden Club and enjoyed taking care of city flower beds and going on garden tours.
Marj was part of a neighborhood homemakers club where they experimented with food and crafts. Marj was also active in Ladies Aide, Guild, served as a Deacon at Granite Lutheran and served as treasurer for the Minnesota Southwest district. Marj was also a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
As Jim’s eyesight failed, Marj took up hunting. First to keep the rabbits out of the gardens and then turkey hunting. Starting at age 70, she was successful five consecutive years filling her turkey tag and was even featured in the Granite paper.
After Jim’s passing, she moved from the farm to Granite Ridge Place, where she enjoyed the various activities and the companionship of the many nice residents.
Surviving family members include son Steve (Mary) Hegna of Black River Falls, Wis. and daughter Connie (Brad) Gunderson of Lakeville: grandchildren: Johanna (Ben) Schram of Madison, Wis.: Kimberly (Caleb) Johnson of Hoffman Estates, Ill., Claire (Kevin) Cafferty of Farmington; Allison (Austin) Skoglund of Minneapolis; Kevin (Jenna) Gunderson of Crystal; Katherine (Brad) Wesely of Eau Claire, Wis.: great-grandchildren Norah Jayne Johnson, Hailey Anne Cafferty, Marley Mae Wesely, and Andre Allan James Johnson.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Jim.
