Derek Hexum, 19, of Balaton, pleaded guilty to a crime in connection to the July 18 shooting of Daniel Scheff, this time in Lyon County.
On Tuesday, Hexum was sentenced in Lyon County for the felony charge of fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle for the July 22 chase that started in Lyon County and ended in Lincoln County near the South Dakota border.
Hexum was sentenced to four years of probation with conditions including completing a chemical use assessment, participating in a cognitive skills course and paying a $500 fine.
The sentence was for eight months in jail, but Hexum will receive credit for the time he has already served since July.
In October, Derek pleaded guilty in Yellow Medicine County for aiding an offender to avoid arrest. The plea acceptance was delayed until the sentencing in December.
On July 18, Scheff was riding with the Hexum brothers south on Hwy. 23 when the vehicle they were in experienced car trouble.
The eldest Hexum and Scheff walked toward Scheff’s relative’s house as Derek fixed a loose battery cable along the side of Hwy. 23. When Derek picked up his brother several minutes later, Scheff was nowhere to be found.
In that time, Devin had allegedly asked Scheff for money before shooting him in the abdomen and chest area with a handgun.
Devin Hexum remains in custody in the Yellow Medicine County Jail on charges of second-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault, awaiting the results of his mental evaluation.
