40 years of Hospice services in the region celebrated in National Hospice Month

CentraCare Hospice is gearing up to celebrate 40 years in service in November during national Hospice Month. The service that serves eighteen counties in West Central Minnesota including Lyon, Yellow Medicine, Chippewa and Redwood, began in Willmar with its first satellite office in Montevideo. “What kind of happened in the early 1980s, the hospitals started with private insurance and then went to Medicare also in what is diagnosed as a disease- related group. We in those groups were given certain number of days that a person could be in the hospital,” explains Judy Stendahl, one of the key players in the creation of the Montevideo satellite as the Director of Nursing at CCM Health. “When that started, we realized we needed to start having more programs within the hospital setting, so we started with Home Care in the early 80s, and then in 1983, we started putting together a Hospice program.”

Average temps expected throughout the weekend

After a warm and breezy weekend, we had some showers and thunderstorms move into the region Sunday night as a cold-front pushed into Minnesota. There was a marginal risk of storms on Sunday across the state with the warm and moist atmosphere. Some spots did hit the lower 80s on Sunday. For example, Redwood Falls topped out at 80 degrees at 4 p.m. on Sunday. Many other locations were in the mid to upper 70s.

Memory Care Corner:

Even though I was unable to attend the Montevideo Area Memory Loss Network (MAMLN) event in person, I understand the Oct. 5th event was a HUGE success! According to Gretchen Reeves, chairperson of the group, 200 people attended the afternoon session and an estimated 90 people came for the 6 p.m.

From the Editor’s Desk

While I’m still plowing through my most chaotic month of the year, I’ve come to the realization that sometimes happiness is really ten minutes in the sun with a cup of coffee, away from all devices of contact. It can be pretty easy to find yourself overwhelmed quite suddenly without realizing it’s happening. My moment came after a long weekend of photography work, with a full day of wedding photography followed by a day of photographing milestones for toddlers.

Beyond Reason

Fear Not October is the month where everyone tries to scare me. They plant ghosts and goblins and witches and skeletons in their front yard.

“Happy are those whose transgression is forgiven.”

Through all of October the gospel text in the Revised Common Lectionary has been on Jesus talking about faith, praise, and prayer to God. Jesus emphasized that faith the size of a mustard seed is all you need; Jesus reminds us to give thanks and praise; Jesus reminds us to pray always; Jesus helps us see how we are like both the tax collector and the Pharisee.
