Throughout last week, the Yellow Medicine East School District hosted a number of activities to help raise funds to assist local families dealing with cancer. Not only did the events help families in the Yellow Medicine East District, but Head Football Coach Lucas Damm also extended the aid to families in Lakeview and Canby as well. “Instead of giving it to a certain charity, we thought it would mean more to give it to families in need since we had a lot of families to help out,” says Damm.
Last week, your usual arts columnist (Jessie Hennen) was knocked out by a head cold, so community artist Leah Cook took over. I’m back now, and sure glad I didn’t try to write last week’s edition while whacked out on cough suppressants – there was a lot of important information in it. Probably instead of sharing it with you, I’d have submitted a terrible poem about fall leaves or something. To recap: after a month of community conversations, Leah’s moved on to the project phase of her residency. She’s planned many interesting things for folks to do and create in Granite Falls over the next month and a half, and we very much hope you can help with any that interest you.
This time of year can always feel a little more challenging for me than other times of the year. From the last week of September through Christmas Day, I work a schedule that burns the candle at both ends between photography, the newspapers, and the boutique, and thus many of my relatives and friends have come to the realization that they’re just simply not going to hear from me much until the next year.
The KK Berge building in downtown Granite Falls is getting a touch of a makeover. Tamara Isfeld, on the board of Granite Area Arts Council, said that “We just updated the gift shop and now we are redoing flooring and putting in some gallery walls to display art. One wall will be on moveable to adjust for classes, and different types of exhibits. We are fortunate enough to have our industrial tech high school students helping with this project.” Granite Area Arts Council is able to do the renovations, which started October 4th, thanks to receiving a grant from the Southwest Minnesota Arts Council. The gallery will remain closed until renovations have been completed.
