Quiet weekend with warmer weather on the way

The state of Minnesota got most of the rain out of the way on Friday just in time for the weekend. Duluth received 1.23 inches of rain for the most rain around the state. Meanwhile, Pierz was close behind with 1.18 inches.

Notes from the Granite Area Arts Council: It’s Meander Time

If you’re reading this on Friday, September 30th from anywhere between 6 and 10pm, please put down the newspaper and make tracks for downtown Granite Falls, where the Light Up the River Meander kickoff event is undoubtedly in full swing. What you can expect: acoustic musicians, at least three small bonfires, businesses open later than usual (and with jazzily lit-up windows, to boot), a riverside family-friendly happy hour from 6 to 8pm, and community artist-in-residence Leah Cook making a temporary “tapestry” out of wild-gathered natural materials from along our river (some of which are pictured above) with anyone who wants to join in. If it’s after 8 and before 10, you might want to venture over to Bluenose for the Get Lit! afterparty, where DJ Ndpth is spinning and conversation is more than likely sparkling. Thanks to the EDA for helping make the Light Up the River event possible! If you happen to be reading this column on Saturday instead, you didn’t miss your shot at Meandering: studios and galleries around the valley will be open from 9am-6pm and again on Sunday from 9am-4pm. There are many paper copies of the brochure around town (I’ve seen stacks by the register at most businesses); you can also pick up a digital version at artsmeander. com.

Memory Care Corner:

In my last article, I wrote about the upcoming free fall movie event being sponsored by MAMLN (the Montevideo Area Memory Loss Network) and the Millennium Theater in Montevideo. The free movie event is scheduled for Wednesday, October 5th and they will have two show times: the first at 2 p.m.

Beyond Reason

The funny thing about time is it’s always something I wish I had more of but the moment I have some actual free time on my hands, I have no idea what to do with it. I mean, where do I start? I could use my time to learn a new language.

Idea sharing sessions scheduled to answer the question – how can the arts support caregiving?

The Granite Falls Living at Home Block Nurse Program recently received a Minnesota State Arts Board (MSAB) Grant, titled the Creative Support for Organizations grant. The organization is putting the grant to use for a new program idea and has scheduled three upcoming idea discussion and listening sessions to ask the question how can the arts support caregiving. The MSAB grant provides the organization with the opportunity to utilize arts programming as a part of their efforts to develop unique caregiver support activities for seniors, people living with disabilities and local caregivers. In keeping with a number of the programs the organization already offers such as the Heart2Heart memory cafe’s projects, the Building Bridges memory choirs performances, the Literary Post Memoir Writing Workshops and the Remember Project Dementia plays, the grant will include work with a program titled “Positively Arts” that will involve a nearly yearlong project with two phases. In the first phase, Danette McCarthy of the Remember Project will work with the organization to coordinate the three scheduled listening sessions. The idea is to generate and inspire ideas that could be put to use in the organizations programs. “We’re inviting a diverse population, so we have certain people who are invited to these but we want this to be open to the general public. We have a number of questions, prompt ideas but the net will be going from very broad to zeroing in on some ideas,” says Mark Roisen of the GF Living at Home Block Nurse Program.
