The YME girls basketball team played a fastpaced, close game against the Canby Lancers at home Thursday evening, taking a loss of 45-46. Leaders in that game included Shelby Mortenson who scored 30 points with 12 rebounds. Stella Schuler added another 8 points with one three-pointer and six steals to add to the team total. The big game’s a’comin’ and every year there’s a lot of talk about the commercials. Normally commercials are a thing I avoid. During a commercial break, I usually take a stroll or engage in light banter. I might fix a snack or even, on occasion, check the laundry.
Right now, the Clarkfield EDA apartments have an eight-person waiting list. That is eight people who are looking for housing in Clarkfield, but they can’t find any. Without housing available, where are they going? Granite, Monte, other towns. Clarkfield is in need of more housing for individuals and for families. Later this month I will be presenting to the Clarkfield EDA a proposal to build a new duplex at the corner of 7th Street and 8th Ave. Building this duplex will provide two more housing opportunities for people that want to live in Clarkfield. It’s not a lot, but it’s a good start to get the EDA moving in the direction to provide more housing in town.
Last week and this week, the Editors of the Minnesota group of newspapers that were purchased by CherryRoad Media began training on how to use the new software system to transition our work over to CherryRoad. Soon, as I've been saying, you'll start seeing the changes in the newspapers, and that will be exciting.
Last Tuesday evening, the YME boys basketball team took a 45-80 loss against Russell-Tyler-Ruthton in Granite Falls. Leaders in that game included Owen Torvik, who scored eight points. At last weeks Pipestone Triangular, the Quad County Cobras, made up of wrestlers from MACCRAY, Renville County West, and Yellow Medicine East) scored wins with Jasen Jansen (182 pounds), an Jacob Savig (195 pounds). Complete scoring from that Triangular follows:
ST. CHARLES, MN (ORIGINALLY OF CLARKFIELD, MN) - Margaret Leone Day was born on October 17, 1932, one of Sidney and Laurena (Reiten) Day’s 10 children, in Granite Falls, MN. She graduated from Clarkfield High School in 1949 before marrying Harry Morland on July 6, 1951 at the Clarkfield Lutheran Church. The couple had 4 children: Marcia, Laurie, Michael, and JoAnn. Shortly after they wed, Harry served in the Air Force until his discharge in 1954 when the family moved back to Clarkfield to take over the family farm. Margaret and Harry were the owners of Morland Country Store, 7 miles south of Clarkfield right off Highway 59, and she dabbled in retail throughout her life. Above all, Margaret and Harry loved adventuring in their camper, especially in the Lake Okoboji, IA area, and enjoyed going dancing together. Known as the quiet one, Margaret could sew and made her children’s clothes herself. She also collected dolls, enjoyed bowling, and relished time spent with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
NEWPORT - Richard“Dick”Vern Schmidt, 78 of Newport, WA passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the Hospice House of Spokane on January 3, 2022. Richard was born on August 1, 1943, in Granite Falls, MN to Arthur and Sara Schmidt.
SACRED HEART - Janet Marie Feldman, age 68, of Sacred Heart, gained her Angel wings on Monday, February 7, 2022, at the RenVilla Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 14, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Sacred Heart. The Vicar Gwen Arneson will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church in Sacred Heart. Arrangements are with Dirks-Blem Funeral Service, Renville, MN.
