Granite Falls Area Chamber of Commerce First Dollar Awards

Recently, the Granite Falls Area Chamber of Commerce presented First Dollar Awards to businesses that have started up or changed ownership. CO- VID-19 has changed the way, or how quickly the Chamber has presented these awards. Those awarded included Korthuis Jewelry, Betty Korthuis Pfaff, owner since June 19, 2020. Additionally, NAPA Star Group changed ownership on April 21, 2021.

Local student makes dean’s list at UMD

The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) has announced its Dean's List for Fall Semester 2021. Students on the Dean's List have achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Local students making the Dean's list are: Madison R. Hinz, Granite Falls, Swenson College of Science and Engineering (SCSE), Biology BS.

Beyond Reason

So, January is many things, but I think the word most people use to describe it is “long”. Yes, technically it’s tied for the longest month of the year with others but I’d like to see any other month look hard and long into the cold, grey eyes of January and see who blinks first.

Last week, the new owner of the newspaper was gracious enough to send all of us who wished to go to the Minnesota Newspaper Association Convention. I jumped at this opportunity because working the way we do these days, remotely and with much smaller staff sizes, networking opportunities don't happen very often. I've always found networking opportunities like this to be a match-strike of inspiration. Being able to chat with those in the same industry and hear what others are doing, or the challenges they are recognizing, and how they are overcoming them helps me to mull over my own thoughts and ideas with more perspective.

Geraldine Donna Frederick

Geraldine Donna Frederick was born April 12, 1940, in Morris, Minnesota to Cletus and Levern (Anderson) Kellen. She was baptized and confirmed in her faith. Geraldine attended Benson High School and graduated in 1958.

Lois Henke

GRANITE FALLS - Lois Henke, 86, of Granite Falls, Minnesota passed away on Monday, January 31, 2022, at Avera Granite Falls Hospital in Granite Falls. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 5, 2022, at 11:00 AM at Granite Falls Lutheran Church in Granite Falls with interment at the church cemetery in the Spring. Visitation will be held Friday, February 4, 2022 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at the Granite Falls Lutheran Church and will continue one hour prior to the service.

Irene Helen Rupp

GRANITE FALLS - Irene Helen Rupp of Granite Falls was received by our Lord and Savior on Friday, January 28, 2022, at the age of 90. She passed away at her home surrounded by family. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, February 4th at 11:00 am at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Granite Falls. Visitation will take place from 5 pm to 7 pm on Thursday, at the Wing-Bain Funeral Home with the Rosary and prayer service at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the services on Friday. Interment at the St. Andrew Catholic Cemetery.
