Minnesota Pollution Control Agency As snow melts across Minnesota, it’s time for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) to kick off its popular program that relies on Minnesotans to monitor our 12,000+ lakes and 92,000+ miles of streams: the Volunteer Water Monitoring Program. 50 years of environmental stewardship We’re celebrating 50 years this year! When the University of Minnesota launched the Volunteer Water Monitoring Program in 1973, it would go on to become the second oldest, and still active, volunteer water monitoring program in the nation.

Minnesota fishing facts season opener May 13th

• The fishing opener refers to the start of fishing for walleye, northern pike, bass, and trout in lakes on inland waters of Minnesota. Seasons for some other species, including sunfish, crappie and channel catfish, are open all year. Seasons also vary on Minnesota waters that border other states or Canadian provinces. Muskellunge season opens on Saturday, June 3.

Shots fired during execution of warrant in Granite Falls

Late Monday afternoon, a force of officers from the Cooperative Enforcement Effort (CEE) VI Drug and Gang Task Force, along with officers from the Granite Falls Police Department, Upper Sioux Community Police Department and Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s Office arrived at a home on the 1100 block of Bergeson Drive in Granite Falls to execute a warrant.

Severe Weather Awareness Week is April 17-21

The week is designed to refresh, remind and educate everyone about the seasonal threats from severe weather and how to avoid them. It’s also a great time to make and practice your emergency plan and build or refresh your emergency preparedness kit.

DNR reminds public to not prune, cut oaks spring through July

Despite a cool and snowy spring, oak trees will soon be at risk of oak wilt infection. Oak wilt is an invasive fungal disease that kills all of Minnesota’s oak species. Not pruning or cutting oaks from April through July is the easiest way to prevent the spread, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
