Envisioning new opportunities for recreation for area residents and visitors to enjoy is fun. But getting parks improved, trails built and other facilities constructed often involves finding a pathway through a tangle of regulations and funding challenges. That can be frustrating but it can also be rewarding and fun, if the effort results in a new park, trail or recreation area.

Snow expected late week

We are well into March and it looks like this month is going to be one that is characterized as being an active month. We started off the month snowy and that trend continued Sunday night into Monday.

Having attended many sporting events over the last couple of years, I’m continually entertained by the conversations the youngest of sports fans are having during the games. Quite often, the youngest fans are crowded right up front, where the action is, and they have lots to say.

New Montevideo Veterans Home on track to open this fall

For more than a decade, Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) leaders closely collaborated with city, county and state elected officials and a Veterans’ stakeholders task force to plan the Montevideo Veterans Home. Communities were highly engaged in the process, with efforts ranging from testifying at the Legislature and donating land for the building to raising additional funds in support of special amenities. Public groundbreaking programs were hosted in summer 2021. Montevideo will join five other existing Homes throughout the state and two other new sites that are also opening in 2023 (Preston and Bemidji), bringing the total number of State Veterans Homes to eight.

While the term “superfood” doesn’t have an exact definition, dietitians would say it means nutrient-packed, and lots of fall produce fits that description. You could also count these foods as functional, meaning there’s science behind the fact that they’re better for your body, offering vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants. If the food you eat is flavorful and satisfying, there is a good chance you will eat less and consume fewer calories, too, and that’s the key to dropping pounds.

Council looks ahead to warmer weather projects

At last Tuesday’s meeting of the Granite Falls City Council, one of the topics of discussion was an issue with the sewer line located underneath the new La Plazita building shared with the Municipal Liquor Store. The sewer line was televised, and it was discovered that the line would need relining, at a cost of $28,089.
