Bluenose Gopher Public House receives $50,000 in national grant funding

Bluenose Gopher Public House, a cooperative public house nestled in the heart of downtown Granite Falls, has received $50,000 from the Backing Historic Small Restaurants Grant Program, a program presented by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and American Express.

I’ve been busily working on my outside gardening skills this summer, attempting to coax life out of the dirt. For all the effort, it has resulted in one very large cherry tomato plant that seems determined to overtake the entire back yard, approximately seven carrots, a mass of lettuce, one monster basil plant and a few struggling pepper plants. There was also a frequent ritual of watering, weeding and checking for signs of life on days I didn’t have the luxury of rain taking care of those duties.

Victory at Sea air show held

On August 16th, Fagen Fighters WWII Museum hosted Victory at Sea. Navy Veteran Carrier Fighter pilot Lt. Commander Ryan Christopherson of Clarkfield, Minnesota, shared a glimpse into his Navy service as a F-14Tomcat pilot, while WWII Navy veteran Robert “Bob” Brix, age 101 of Clara City, Minnesota, received a standing ovation at the program hed during the event. Daniel McPherson, grandson of WWII Navy Ace Donald M McPherson flew with pilot, Steve Swift in the Cavanaugh Flight Museum TBM Avenger Torpedo Bomber in the radioman/rear gunner seat. The event was dedicated to WWII Navy Ace Donald M McPherson who passed just two days before the event took place.

Wood Lake Fair draws a crowd

The annual Wood Lake Fair was held Monday through Wednesday last week, drawing a crowd to the downtown area for activities over the three day affair. Midwest Rides Carnival rides were open all three nights, along with the Lakeview Booster Club Bingo Stand, and the burger stand. The parade was held Wednesday evening. The event is made possible by the effort s of the Wood Lake Community Club and the volunteers who organize the event.

Echo Legion Auxiliary working on grave marker project

Over the years, it is easy for records to be lost or destroyed, which may cause a scramble to find replacements in certain situations. The same could be said to be the case with the Echo Legion Auxiliary’s new grave marker project.

Fatal Skid Loader Accident in Yellow Medicine County

On August 20, 2025, at approximately 1:40 PM, the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting that an individual in a skid loader had slid down into a drainage ditch and was trapped in the loader near the 2900 block of 440th Street, in rural Clarkfield, Minnesota.
