The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ latest ruffed grouse counts found Minnesota’s spring 2025 population is lower statewide than last year. Ruffed grouse drums per stop were 1.8 statewide, down from 2.3 drums per stop last year, an expected drop considering spring 2024 was the highest 10-year cycle population peak for ruffed grouse since 1972.
Question: I was driving in the metro area the other day and I witnessed a bus driving on the shoulder. Is this allowed?
America believes in second chances. It’s the land of reinvention. The country that invented brunch, rebooted Batman eleven times, and gave Paul Giamatti a leading man phase. And now, it has done the impossible: turned a backyard barbecue game into a professional sport.
I understand the pain of social isolation well. On July 2nd, I celebrated completing my ninth year of sobriety. I was addicted to alcohol and the more I drank, the more isolated I became and the more I lied to myself about everything. Since I was still functioning, it couldn’t be that serious. I had an image in my mind of what a problem drinker looked like (someone in ragged clothes passed out in the median of the road in the middle of the day holding an empty bottle in a paper bag) and there was no way that was me. Alcohol is a depressant. Drinking to feel better was the biggest lie of all- the more I drank, the darker life became.

Mid-day on Monday, around 300 registered riders along with various additional supporters rolled into Granite Falls for the annual Bike MS Ride Across Minnesota. The ride that raises funds and awareness for multiple sclerosis, began in Marshall that day. The group camped Monday evening at Rice Park in Granite Falls, enjoying dining, entertainment and artwork while visiting town.
I’d like to first make it clear that I am not a famous writer, and that this story might just be the result of sour grapes. The closest I’ve come: last July, our sketch show performed at Bryant Lake Bowl in Minneapolis. Local treasure Scott Tedrick came, took notes, and featured us on the cover of the second edition of the Yellow Medicine Arrow, the magazine he edits about happenings along 212.
