Cyclists roll through Granite Falls July 21–22 and 24–25 for Bike MS event

Granite Falls is preparing to welcome hundreds of cyclists this summer as part of the Bike MS: Ride Across Minnesota 2025, a five-day charity ride organized by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Riders will be in the community on July 21–22 and again on July 24–25, with Granite Falls serving as one of the overnight stops along the route.

More rain late week

For the most part we had a nice Independence Day weekend. We did see some heat and humidity on Friday that sparked some showers and thunderstorms. However, the rest of the long weekend was generally pleasant.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28

I’m currently at my “big” summer vacation. My husband and I have national parks on our bucket list, and we will hit up three over our 4th of July holiday vacation. But that’s not all, we’ll also visit eight other sites that are state parks, state monuments, national monuments, scenic overlooks, or museums. We’ll travel through Minnesota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and Nevada. We’ll be gone 8 nights. That’s a lot to see as we average about 450 miles per day. Some don’t call that a vacation, it’s too busy; but that’s what we like to do.

Public input sought on reducing statewide walleye limit from six to four

Changes in lake habitat, ecology and conditions coupled with technological advances in fishing gear and methods are prompting the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to seek public input on a possible reduction in the statewide walleye possession limit from six to four fish.

From the Editor’s Desk

Now that my oldest child has resumed his military work after his couple of month leave in Minnesota, and has returned to New York, that of course, means my grandmother has resumed her cookie baking mission.

Ask a Trooper: Kids & Airbags…

Question: Can you write about airbags? I know you just wrote an article about it being best for kids to ride in the back seat. I know airbags are an issue for kids in the front seat so I thought this would be a good topic. Thank you.

Beyond Reason: Gone Fishin’…

He began with frogging. Then jigging. By noon, he said, he’d be hula popping. I kept nodding, as though these were natural things for a man to say while I was drinking my first cup of coffee. Or ever.

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1

My hometown still has a big 4th of July celebration. As a kid I remember the parades, the street dance, the food, and all the fun. But as an adult, this week I’ll be reminded of our freedom. I think it’s always good to remember why we celebrate; if we forget, our freedom doesn’t mean as much to us anymore as we just take it for granted. I did a little research because I really don’t remember exactly what I was taught in high school.

Notes from the Granite Area Arts Council: Meet Your Bench Artist…

I am thrilled to report that the artist who won the dog park bench’s artist call for submissions is none other than whiz-kid SMSU PSEO student / recent Marshall High school grad Leah Teig. Based on an essay she wrote about learning to paint cats in my class last fall, I suspected she’d be a shoo-in; she waxed rhapsodic about the tiny brushes she learned to use, about her triumphant struggle to adequately capture a sparkle in the cat’s eyes. Even before she showed me the painting, I knew it would be good.
