This Happened Here: A Saturday Night at Olof’s Place

It is a dark and stormy night: perfect weather for my current activity, which happens to be “sit in a potentially-haunted chapel with a group of 10, two professional ghost hunters, a historian, and an app that purports to translate spectral voices into audible speech.” Later, I will quietly complete a Duolingo lesson before midnight so as not to break my streak; a hard bench in a long-dead pastor’s home church will officially become the weirdest place I have ever learned Polish via an angry bird app.

Betzen inducted into Kilowatts Hall of Fame

At last Friday’s Kilowatts Baseball game, a special ceremony was held to honor the legacy of local baseball legend Don Betzen. Community members gathered at Richter Field to celebrate his induction into the Kilowatts Hall of Fame during the game.

First Pride celebration held in Granite Falls

Community members gathered at The YES! House on Thursday evening, June 26th, for the first annual Granite Falls Pride celebration. The event featured karaoke hosted by Rick LeRen, a photo booth, DIY bracelet-making, a Sparle Station and food from the Rollin’ Dough Frybread stand - offering an evening of inclusion and solidarity for LGBTQ+ individuals and allies.

Storms add to flooding in local area

Last week, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had to make changes to the water level at the Lac qui Parle Lake Dam near Watson because, they said, of ongoing rain. The Army Corps of Engineers released a press release stating, “The additional water releases are needed to minimize the risk of the reservoir from overtopping the emergency spillway, which happens at an elevation of 941.3 feet. The increased outflow of water into the Minnesota River means additional localized flooding is likely.”

Clarkfield man sentenced after standoff with SWAT

A 28-year-old man from Clarkfield has been sentenced to 210 months (17 and 1/2 years) in prison following a police standoff at a rural Boyd farmhouse. He received credit for 283 days already served.

From the Editor’s Desk

On Saturday evening, I was finally able to enjoy a night off from all various jobs duties and so we decided that it would be lovely to go for a dip in the cold spring, enjoy a dinner out of town, and take in a movie. The heat and humidity made the dip in the cold spring lovely, and having the chance to dine out somewhere we don’t get to very often was also lovely.
