One week ago, we were enjoying temperatures in the 60s and 70s across much of the state. Parts of Minnesota were even in the 80s and lower 90s across the Twin Cities and southern Minnesota.

Suspect in last week’s police standoff charged

In the late afternoon hours of April 10th, a force of officers from the Cooperative Enforcement Effort (CEE) VI Drug and Gang Task Force, along with officers from the Granite Falls Police Department, Upper Sioux Community Police Department and Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s Office arrived at a home on the 1100 block of Bergeson Drive in Granite Falls to serve a felony warrant.

Bert Raney Elementary to get new playground this summer

The Bert Raney Elementary students are excited about the recent announcement that the school board approved at the December meeting, a new playground installation this summer. Bert Raney Elementary’s current playground was installed in 1995 by Miracle Playground of Redwood Falls,, and has a variety of repairs and replacements that have led to the need for a new playground. In 2021, the district realized they could no longer get new replacement pieces for the current playground, and started to seriously discuss replacement. The playground being as old as it is has far exceeded its expected lifespan of 15 years. BRE Principal Lisa Hansen notes that the playground is heavily used year round, so the school has more than gotten its use out of the existing equipment.

School board discusses ways to fill open positions

At last Tuesday evening’s meeting of the Yellow Medicine East School Board, YME Middle/ High School Principal Jana Anderson gave a report on happenings in the school, discussing the upcoming Indigenous Art Day. The day is held on April 26th. “This is led by our student representatives and it’s an opportunity for our art students to learn different techniques from local Indigenous artists,” Anderson said. Anderson also noted that Prom will be held May 6th, with registration due by April 28th.
