Kota Rae Photography opens new studio

Dakota Burghuis, originally of rural Montevideo, has recently opened her photography studio located in Granite Falls. Kota Rae Photography really started for Burghuis when she was 16 years old. She says, “My whole family called me Kota growing up and Rae is my middle name.” Burghuis said. Burghuis grew up on a horse and cattle farm in rural Montevideo, and she attended school there. Her family, originally from the Granite Falls area (her maiden name is Weber). Burghuis and her husband Cody now reside in Granite Falls with their daughter and two hound dogs. “ our daughter and two hound dogs.

Incoming spring brings rise in crime rates

At Monday evening’s meeting of the Granite Falls City Council, Police Chief Brian Struffert submitted a report of March activities in the Police Department. In his report, Chief Struffert noted that the department had been working to locate a Minnesota Department of Corrections fugitive that was known to be staying at residences within Granite Falls City limits. On March 9th, one of the officers observed the fugitive driving in an area he was known to frequent.

YME Trap Shooting starts this week

The Yellow Medicine East High School Trap Teams SPRING 2023 season will get started on Sunday, March 26th at 1:30 pm. There are nine shoots total. Five of those shoots are for the conference competition rounds against other schools. This also includes a State Championship in June. This year the team has 18 athletes who will compete with individual scores and a team of five in whatever class they qualify in. This year’s team includes four-Seniors, four-Juniors, two-Sophomores, two-Freshman, two in eighth grade, two in seventh grade and one in sixth grade with one of them being brand new to the team. “We are looking forward to a great season,” says Coach/ Manager Sandy Berthelsen. YME’s Trap Team shoots at the Minnesota Heartland Preserve just outside of Granite Falls.

Sandra Torgerson, 79, of Granite Falls passed away on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, at Avera Granite Falls Care Center. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
